REAL RIS’ Summer School 2024

REAL RIS Summer School ‘Co-creation for innovation’ aims to gather Croatian and Latvian students and young professionals, mentors from the industry, academia and NGOs, cities and innovators into an engaging co-design experience and learning-by-doing activity in the beautiful City of Šibenik in Croatia, from the 22nd to 26th of July 2024.

The programme is financed by EIT Urban Mobility and focused on the needs of the innovation ecosystems and local mobility systems in Croatia, Latvia and other RIS Countries.

About REAL RIS project:

REAL RIS project REAL RIS aims to close the knowledge gap hindering the development of sustainable urban mobility systems and liveable urban spaces in RIS countries, starting from Latvia and Croatia. RIS countries must bridge the gaps related to the capacity, capability and collaboration of the local stakeholders. The project is organized by three partners: VEFRESH (Latvia), REGEA (Croatia), ODRAZ (Croatia). 


About the REAL RIS’ Summer School:

REAL RIS Summer School will take place in the City of Šibenik (Croatia) from July 22nd to 26th 2024. The title of the 2024 REAL RIS Summer School is: ‘Co-creation for innovation’


The objectives of the REAL RIS Summer School are:

  • to educate students about planning and executing measures targeting zero-emission mobility in coastal cities, with a focus on exploiting existing or creating new innovative concepts, products and services, while using the benefits of interdisciplinary and international teamwork;

  • involve the students, university mentors and industry/SME representatives in programme that brings together all sides of the knowledge triangle to learn from each other and co-create solutions, with a view to generating long-lasting partnerships;

  • to raise awareness of EIT Urban Mobility education activities and services among the university staff, with the purpose is to generate an interest for all the challenges and opportunities to build sustainable urban mobility solutions and liveable urban spaces;

  • to attract the students to the master’s and doctoral programmes of EIT Urban mobility;

  • to promote REAL RIS and the results of the Summer School to a wider audience including city representatives, development agency, universities and faculties, students, and industry.


The school is a continuation and an upgrade of successful activities previously undertaken through the CLIMASUM project carried out by ODRAZ. In 2024 itwill gather an international group of students, university staff and the industry to address the mobility challenges of the coastal cities.

REAL RIS Summer School will be implemented in English, as an international school for Croatian and Latvian students.


Who can apply?

REAL RIS is looking for students that meet the eligibility conditions presented in Table 1 of the attached file (please see PDF titled “Call for students”).

All selected students will have to present evidence of meeting the listed requirements within one week after they have been notified of being selected.


What is the Summer School’s work plan?

REAL RIS Summer School will be implemented throughout 5 days, starting from the 22nd of July (Monday - Friday). The participants are expected to timely arrive to St. John’s Fortress in Šibenik.


What are the expected results of learning-by-doing?
The students will have 4 days to develop a rough concept for an innovative service or a product that could contribute to resolving one of the real city challenges that will be defined. Existing concepts can also be adjusted to create something new. The innovation can be proposed together with spatial or other types of interventions to achieve synergy and increase targeted impacts.


What are the costs of participation?

All costs (transportation, accommodation and meals) are covered by the organizers of the Summer School. Note: Only the costs of public transport will be refunded. No compensation will be provided for the cost of arrival by private vehicle. Flight costs for the students from Latvia will be covered by REAL RIS.

How and when to apply?

The applications can be submitted between 29th of February to 29th of April (23:59 CET) through an online application form. Only applications written in English, submitted through an online form, and received within the deadline will be considered.

Location and venue:

Šibenik is one of the oldest Croatian cities, located on the east coast of the Adriatic sea and along the estuary of the Krka River. Its population is about 40.000 and is famous for its cultural and natural heritage. Šibenik is the only town in Croatia and one of the few cities in the world with two monuments listed on UNESCO's list of protected cultural heritage sites.

All main REAL RIS Summer School activities will be carried out in St. John’s Fortress, where the educational campus is situated. The campus is equipped with interactive classrooms, bedrooms and conference rooms. There are also 14 dormitories, three fully equipped classrooms, a presentation area and rooms for dinning, socializing and resting. Therefore, all participants of the Summer School will also be accommodated at the premises. Beautiful sunsets and a breath-taking view are also included!

The campus is intended exclusively for organized groups of students, pupils, young experts and artists who come to Šibenik as part of study visits, summer schools and exchanges.
